From having worked in retail, I think that those baskets are like $30 each or something stupid at wholesale. Almost definitely cost more than whatever he took.

In the U.K. we had to s ecurity tag our baskets for a while as shopping baskets were being stolen from stores all over the U.K. and melted down.

It’s similar to metal and cable theft which is getting more common around the world.

When I lived in SF the carts had a wheel lock that would activate if you crossed the big yellow line that had a buried wire underneath. This was super fun to learn the hard way. I decided I didn't want to use the elevator but walk around to the parking garage on the roof using the car ramp. I got about 15' from the front door and it locked up. Fortunately the manager unlocked it and sent me to the elevator.
